Book Review: And Then There Were None

Image
Agatha Christie is rightly known as the "Queen of Crime". Her crime novels are among the best thrillers in English literature. It is practically impossible to correctly guess the killer in her murder mysteries, but when he or she is revealed, we all bang our heads and think, why didn't I think of that?! Her stories are beautifully straightforward yet complex. "And Then There Were None", released in 1939 under the now-offensive title "Ten Little Indians", has been unanimously voted as Christie's best novel out of her 80+ bestselling crime books.  It is an extraordinarily captivating and scintillating read that will hook you from the very first page. Once you pick it up, it's practically impossible to put it down. Beware though! The entire story is incredibly creepy and disturbing, so I'd advise you not to read it at night if you get scared easily.  The story is about ten seemingly different people- a level-headed schoolmistress, a ruthless...

Welcome to Jui's Diaries!

Image
Hello! I'm Jui Shah, student studying in grade 10.  I have a passion for writing and I created this lifestyle blog to pursue it. My blog is inspired by Meghan Markle's blog, The Tig . I love reading books and travelling, so expect to see a lot of book reviews (and ramblings) and travel diaries here! ;) Though I am no expert, I have developed a newfound interest in photography, and I will use the pictures clicked by me to adorn this little blog of mine.  Let me start off by saying that I adore books. I fell in love with reading at the age of four, and haven't looked back since. I read a variety of genres: crime, fantasy, humour, horror, mythology, friendship- you name it.  I read the Harry Potter books when I was nine, and I have become unhealthily obsessed with the Wizarding World ever since. Every time I re-read, I laugh loudly when Peeves torments Umbridge, cheer when Ron and Hermione finally ( finally! ) get together and cry when Harry looks into the Mirror of Erised. ...

Feminism: Why?

Image
Feminism is probably one of the most misunderstood things in society. How many times have people attacked the label "feminist"? How many times have people confused it with "hating men"? It's really important to know the real definition and principles of feminism, which is one of the biggest movements still continuing in the 21st century. What is Feminism? Merriam-Webster's dictionary defines feminism as " the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes". Many people wrongly equate it to misandry, or hatred of men, something akin to misogyny. Why "feminism"? Why can't it be called "equalism"? This is one of the most common arguments used against feminism. "If it is about equality of the genders, why is it called 'feminism'? That's because equality hasn't been achieved yet. We're slowly working towards it. What we need now is equity . The reason why feminism is called feminism...

Magical Quotes from Harry Potter that are Sadly Underrated

Image
The Harry Potter books are filled with inspiring characters and wonderful quotes. Some magnificent quotes like 'The ones who love us never really leave us' and 'I solemnly swear that I am up to no good' are talked about a lot, but there are many other inspiring quotes we probably missed while reading the books. Here are some forgotten quotes which hold a special place in my heart... "I am what I am, an' I'm not ashamed" - Rubeus Hagrid, Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire   Remember that part in Goblet of Fire, when Rita Skeeter wrote horrible things about Hagrid in the Daily Prophet? Hagrid was mortified at first, and decided not to teach at Hogwarts ever again. But then Harry, Ron, Hermione and Dumbledore pacified him, and Hagrid realized that Rita Skeeter's nasty articles should not deter him in any way and he was perfect as he was. Hagrid is one of the most lovable characters in the series. Though he had a very troubled childhood, it did n...
